CASE 38: Tibia Osteosarcoma

Our male pediatric patient, who underwent extensive resection following chemotherapy for proximal tibial osteosarcoma, and subsequent recovery with liquid nitrogen, was reconstructed using an ipsilateral vascularized fibula and gastrocnemius muscle flap.

 

Before the surgery: X-ray shows an irregularly bordered sclerotic lesion in the proximal tibia.

Before the surgery:
The CT scan shows bone damage and extension into soft tissue at the same location.

Before the surgery:
The MRI also shows widespread surrounding edema.

During the Surgery:
Recovery is observed with liquid nitrogen after resection.

During the Surgery:
The image shows the cavity created after resection, fixation of the recovered bone with a titanium plate, patellar tendon suturing, and gastrocnemius flap preparation.

During the Surgery:
Gastrocnemius and soleus muscle flap with soft tissue coverage is observed.

Post-Surgery:
The X-ray shows the recovered bone after resection and the fixation of the fibula with a titanium anatomical plate.
